Angela Mckay has built a visual world entirely her own – one filled with tangled botanicals, wandering animals, saturated colour and the kind of detail that rewards a second look. Working across illustration, painting and surface pattern design, her hand-painted style feels both nostalgic and slightly surreal, balancing precision with play.

Raised in the bushlands of Southern Western Australia by a Thai mother who migrated in her twenties, Angela grew up surrounded by vast natural landscapes that continue to echo through her work today. Though now based in Naarm (Melbourne), she spent much of her professional life in Brooklyn, New York, where her practice expanded across fashion, publishing, hospitality and large-scale murals.

Since then, her work has travelled far and wide – commissioned by major global brands and publications across Australia, Europe and the United States. Yet despite the scale of her commercial success, Angela remains most energised by self-directed projects – work where curiosity and experimentation can take the lead.

Whether creating a mural, illustrating a book or filling the pages of a travel sketchbook, her process still begins by hand. Pencil sketches, collected observations and fleeting moments slowly build into richly layered gouache, pencil and watercolour works.

Dare we dream

“I’d love to see more diverse faces on screen and more diverse stories being told – stories that feel genuine, specific and reflective of the communities already around us.”
