Growing up between cultures can mean searching for stories that reflect your own. Born in Hong Kong to a Filipina mother and English father, Lara Day rarely saw her mixed, transnational experience reflected back. Today, the writer, coach and digital strategist brings stories from and about Asia into collective consciousness, helping kindred creatives find their voice.

In 2020, Lara arrived on Kaurna Country in Adelaide for a family holiday and never went home. She values how local creative communities support one another and collaborate across cultures – a spirit she brings to Lara Day Studio, her coaching practice helping ambitious creatives discover their “Big, Beautiful Work”.

Integral to Lara’s practice is surfacing lesser-known histories and connecting past and present. Across TIME and The Wall Street Journal, she led an award-winning multimedia project on Kowloon Walled City and developed the content strategy for M+, opening the collection records of Hong Kong’s largest museum of modern and contemporary visual culture to the public.

Lara’s debut book, Abakada: The Language of Everything (March 2027), is an experimental memoir-in-essays inspired by the Philippines’ 1939 ‘indigenised’ alphabet. Exploring language loss, lineage and home, it reclaims ancestral strength, tracing a line from her datu great-great-grandfather in Luzon to her own life between cultures.

Dare we dream

“I’d love to see Australian media reflect the real diversity of this country, from First Nations excellence to successive waves of migrants, rather than a single point of view. That richness is what makes living here truly great. I want to work with leaders brave enough to go first, who inspire change through desire, not shame.”
