“You only need that one shot.” It’s a simple philosophy, but one that says plenty about Roger Bope’s approach to photography. Whether capturing the intimacy of a portrait or waiting for the right moment in a landscape, the Congolese-Australian photographer values patience, observation and the stories a single frame can hold.

With his family having left Congo in 2010, Roger now lives on Kaurna Country in Adelaide, where he appreciates the peace and freedom to create. His connection to Congo lives on through family and community, while his heritage comes through in his editorial photography through colour. Above all, he’s drawn to images that carry depth and emotion.

Roger first picked up a camera to photograph clothing for his own brand, only to discover a greater love for the medium itself. Working across film and digital photography, he approaches each shoot with an open mind, often finding inspiration in old National Geographic books. Portraiture remains especially meaningful for the personal connection it creates between photographer and subject.

For Roger, meaningful photography isn’t about imposing a signature style, but recognising the story worth telling. Guided by curiosity and a belief in creating with purpose, he hopes his work will connect, inspire and contribute to a more accepting creative community.

Dare we dream

“I want to keep exploring what photography can do, challenge myself creatively and work alongside people who bring different perspectives to the table. More than anything, I’d love to see an Australian creative industry that’s more open, accepting and willing to give emerging talent a chance.”
