Two distinct energies sit at the centre of Nikki Malvar’s work – one that constructs, and one that observes. A Filipino creative director and photographer, she moves between building fully realised campaign worlds and documenting what already exists, with equal precision.

Living and working on Gadigal Country, Sydney, her practice spans commercial direction through her studio Heist Creative and a parallel editorial and travel lens. The two modes are intentionally held apart – one driven by concept and authorship, the other by attention and restraint.

Her early life was defined by movement. Leaving the Philippines at five, she grew up across Thailand, the United States and back again before settling in Australia. That constant recalibration sharpened the way she sees – an instinct to read a room, a landscape, a person quickly, and to understand what sits beneath the surface.

There’s clarity in how Nikki Malvar approaches her work. She is drawn to projects that allow her to go deep – whether that’s building a campaign from the ground up or documenting the slower rhythms of a place. What sits underneath it all is a perspective that challenges how stories are told, and more importantly, who is trusted to tell them.

Craft and practice

  • Creative direction and campaign world-building

  • Editorial and travel photography

  • Visual storytelling across brand and culture

  • Concept development and art direction

  • Documenting landscape, people and cultural rituals

Dare we dream

“I want to see the industry move beyond performative diversity toward something with real teeth. Visibility alone isn’t enough – it’s about backing complex cultural stories and trusting the people who live them to lead. Too often, safer choices are rewarded. I’d love to see more support for work with edge, and for voices that bring a less predictable point of view.”
